Hebrews 1:1-2
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the
prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he
has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and
through whom also he made the universe.
God Speaks to Us
I have had some people tell me that God spoke to them and told them
that I was supposed to go to a church in another state or that I was
supposed to do this or that, but the only sure way that I know God
speaks to me and you is through His written Word, the Bible. The Bible
is literally God speaking to us since every word in the Bible is the
very breath of God (2 Tim. 3:16). I am very hesitant to believe others
when they say that God spoke to them when I have God’s Word speaking to
me already. His Word is alive and active and can discern my thoughts,
and it pierces down to the innermost parts of my being (Heb. 4:12). Like
a sword, it cuts, but it cuts in order to heal. So my question to you
is this: Have you heard God speaking to you today, or have you been so
busy that He gets a busy signal when trying to speak?
Too Busy for God?
If you and I are too busy and can’t hear God speaking to us through
His Word or to our hearts by the Holy Spirit, then we are too busy. I
plead guilty to sometimes being too busy to listen to God, and I paid
for it. If I can’t find time to allow God to speak to me, then I am
misusing my time and my priorities are all wrong. Every morning before
breakfast or coffee, I pray and read my Bible so that God will speak to
me through His written Word. But more than this, I must be still before
Him and allow Him to speak to me in the stillness of the early morning
because He often speaks to me in a quiet whisper; if I’m too busy, I
can’t hear what He’s trying to tell me.
Speak and Listen
We can speak to God through prayer, but like any conversation, we
must allow the other person to speak. We need to pray to God but then
have a quiet time where we can allow God to speak to us (Psalm 46:10).
Think about how you talk to your spouse, children, best friend,
employer, or co-worker. Do you do all the talking? Can they even get a
word in edgewise? You probably give them time to talk. In the same way,
we need to be silent before God at times and allow Him to speak to our
hearts those things He desires for us to know. A one-way conversation is
no conversation at all, and if we hog all the conversation, we cut off
the chance to hear from God. Let Him speak; be quiet before Him. Have
moments of silent mediation after you read the Word of God and after
prayer to give Him time to communicate what’s on His heart.
A Closing Prayer
Father God, please forgive me for hogging all the conversation and
not allowing You to speak to me. I need to hear Your voice so that I can
follow You and know Your will, and I am sorry for being too busy, for
You are never too busy for me. In Jesus’ name I pray.
Amen
