I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live
pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ's return. May you
always be filled with the fruit of your salvation (Phil. 1:10-11).
There is an old saying, " The devil makes work for idle hands." This is
so true. Spiritually, you are most vulnerable when you have nothing or
little to do.
Paul reminded the Christians of Philippi of this and
made use of their willingness to be his partners. He encouraged them to
spread the gospel. The fact that Paul was in prison when he wrote this
letter doesn't mean that they could be less zealous, or that they should
do nothing until he was set free.
Christians often think they
are helpless when the leader of their group is not present. Nothing is
further from the truth. Idle time is dangerous. If they would occupy
themselves with good deeds, there wouldn't be any time left for mischief
and wickedness.
Paul's advice is just as valid today. If you
forge ahead, helping others, you will have no time to get involved in
sinful things. You won't moan and complain either - something we tend to
get better at the older we get and the more prosperous we are! Christ
expects you to be busy. He wants you to work together in building the
Christian community; passing on the faith to others; ministering to
those who struggle; walking alongside those who mourn.
Temptation usually comes in through a door that has deliberately been left open.
