A Clear Conscience (Read 1 Timothy 1:1-11)

The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith (1 Tim. 1:5).

Someone once said, “Your conscience is the voice inside that warns you someone is watching you.” Is it the thought of someone else watching you, or the possibility that God is? Conscience has also been called “God’s soft whispering in your inner being.” Sometimes a guilty conscience frightens you and paralyzes you so that you can’t act. It can also encourage you to be honest about something you are hiding. A French saying goes: There is no pillow as soft as a clear conscience.

Underlying the thought of a conscience is the knowledge inside you of what you have done. A clear conscience means you are comfortable with what you know about yourself. A guilty conscience means that you know God is not comfortable with what you know about yourself. The only way to really have a clear conscience is to confess every known sin before God so that He can forgive you and purify your thinking. Paul knew that a guilty conscience would arrest the flow of God’s love in people that would otherwise have served Him devotedly. He knew that to have a clear conscience you have to live a pure life. He didn’t want his co-workers to be hampered by sin from the past clouding their lives.

If there is anything on your conscience that undermines your work for Christ, don’t postpone dealing with it straightaway. Let the healing power of Christ touch you anew and revive you. Allow Him to make you whole and clean like only He can do.

Lord Jesus, I plead for a clear and pure conscience. Amen.
