A Light in the Darkness {Read John 1:1-18}

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only the light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr ~

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it {John 1:5}.

     The movie Amazing Grace is about the life of William Wilberforce and the campaign he launched to abolish slavery in the early nineteenth century. It is a story of compassion, pity, conviction, courage and perseverance. It can be said that Wilberforce truly "saw the light" because he saw how cruel and wicked the slave trade was, though everybody accepted it as fine.
     Because his campaign challenged the rich, he was met with tough opposition from those who wanted to keep the slave trade going. But Wilberforce, convinced that he was called by God to free the world of this gruesome evil, pressed on until, after many years of toil, he achieved his goal. He was surrounded by darkness, but it never quenched the light of God that shone in his heart and life.
     There will always be darkness in this world. In a certain sense it is a form of chaos that ruled before creation that is trying to re-establish itself. The birth of Christ, a sign of the victory of light over darkness, is an indication from God that He will not allow darkness to triumph. This is why Christ's birth is a celebration of hope, joy, love and God's light. Each of us can contribute toward keeping that Light burning.

Jesus, Light of this dark world, shine in our darkness and light everything up. Amen.
